Can someone tell me what the best utility is for cloning a Windows hard drive?

I have a 160 GB HD in my Windows laptop.

It is low on space.

So I want to clone it to... maybe a 500 GB SSB.

Then I'll install the SSD.

Is Acronis the best choice for this?

Acronis True Image can do the job, but a lot of free software can do it
as wel (google is your friend ;-))

Check to see if the software you're using, has any partition
alignment capabilities. If the laptop is Windows 7 or Windows 8,
the partitions might already have good alignment, in which
case naive cloning is good enough.

And alignment isn't absolutely necessary. It just improves
sequential performance when copying files a bit.

In some cases, the SSD manufacturer now provides their
own utility. In which case, you don't need to shop for
anything.

I encourage you to just plug in the SSD and install some free OS like
Linux just to flog the system. You want to make sure the SSD is working
before you transfer personal data. I had one of those shitty OCZ SSDs
brick on me when cloning.

I only buy SSDs that rhyme with Sintel. I don't give a **** about
performance. I want it to work and last.

If it doesn't have a five year warranty, it is shit.

I did the SSD sector alignment game about a month ago. It can be done
with parted magic, in this case gparted.
