Cloning Drive Question

I've just bought a new hard drive and I'm going to clone my existing "C"
drive onto it using Norton Ghost. The reason being that my existing "C"
drive is on its last legs and I don't want to have to reinstall Windows XP
and all that goes with it. My question is, do I have to format the new disk
first or is this something Norton Ghost does? I've never used the software
before so I really don't know what I'm letting myself in for.

Cheers.

Ghost will take care of the whole thing...
you won't have to format first

Ghost works very well...though you may find the instructions are a bit too
much "geek speak" <g>

Do you already have Norton Ghost? I did this recently using Acronis True
Image and was not dissapppointed. The program very easy to use. You start
up a "Install new hard drive" wizard, which asks me exactly what I wanted
to do in very simple terms and graphics. It deals with things like whether
this will be your main disk, or just an additional disk. Also if you are
going to keep your old disk as additional storage, or as backup. The whole
process went very smoothly. When I have to this operation again, you bet I
will use True Imge again.

You don't need to format...you don't even need to partition. Just put
the Ghost boot disk into the drive...and follow the bouncing ball.

Just be aware that the new drive may not boot properly when you get
done...depending on a LOT of things. If you have any problems, don't
get excited...just get back to us.

Good luck.

Have a nice week...

I used Norton Ghost to image my hard drive onto DVDs. I could be
wrong, but I really think it is smart enough to look, and will tell
you if it needs it, & probably will format it for you. It may just
format as it goes along, I am not sure, because I think it is copying
everything bit for bit when it images...

If the hard drive is still good and you only wanted a bigger drive, why not
install the new drive as a second drive, and keep the old drive for running
the operating system?

You can do a backup with Ghost, and retrieve it afterwards. This usually
works out very well. It is best to put the image on a second hard drive.
