I have a hard drive identical to the one in my laptop. Is there anything
out there that will do a plain vanilla bit-clone of my system drive to that
drive?

I'm not interested in "smart" backup "systems" with a thousand options, just
a straight clone that will make an exact, bootable copy of my system drive.

Yes you can get a utility from your own HD maker. For example Western
Digital and Seagate provide Acronis software that is highly rated by most
people. I use Norton Ghost 15 and that is quite good for my purpose. You
can also download a free trial from Acronis website that will do exactly
what you want it to do.

Yes, there are several. One good option is the free Acronis TrueImage
trial. Install it to your current drive, attach hte new drive, and clone.

Jim...
Possibly you're aware that there are "tons" of disk-cloning programs
available - both commercial & "freebies". All one has to do is undertake a
Google search on "disk cloning programs". Nearly needless to say every user
has his or her favorite program. You've already heard from a number of
responders recommending the Acronis True Image program (which also has
disk-imaging capability as well as being a disk-cloning program).

You should avail yourself of the opportunity of trying out various programs
that seem to have some appeal to you. Obviously the freebies are there for
the downloading and most commercial programs have demo or trial versions
available. Determine for yourself what particular program best serves your
needs.

For a number of reasons, we greatly prefer the Casper 6 disk-cloning program
for the vast majority of PC users. I won't go into the specific reasons in
this post of why we do so but if you're interested so indicate and I'll post
them in some detail.

In the meantime, you may want to try out the trial version of the Casper
program. It's slightly crippled but will give you a reasonably good idea of
the program's capability. See http://www.fssdev.com/trial

Or Macrium Reflect, whose free version is not merely a trial but simply
lacks some features of the paid version. It works for me.
