The clock on my friend's computer jumps an even 3 hours every day or
so. He resets it and a day or so later it is 3 hours off again.

Anyone have any idea how this can happen?

Thanks

Tell your "friend" to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

What Operating System is he using? At a guess it might be that he has some
software installed that will synchronize his time with the atomic time
clocks (Windows XP has this feature built in) and he has his Time Zone set
wrong.

Actually, I don't think that's it in this case. It would only be the cause
if the system was off and then the time would be what it was when the system
was turned off, it wouldn't increase or decrease (it certainly wouldn't
increase, come to think of it) by three hours. More than likely there's some
software causing the problem (number one suspect is NAV's Live Update
feature).

Just to clarify further - The hours are the only part of the time
affected - not the minutes. That could indicate time zone trouble.
I have told my friend that, no reply as yet.

Thanks

Had a CMOS battery die just last week and the time and date would come up as
midnight of January 1, 2000, not the time the system was turned off :-)

He has the wrong time zone set, and it automatically adjust itself to
the correct time for that zone. Check to see what time zone its set for.
Right click on the time, see menu for time date, left click New menu
opens to show calendar, and shows menu for time zone. Go there set for
right zone and Bill's your uncle.

He says that was it! He had wrong time zone.

Thanks

lol, that stupid time zone thing got me a lil on the Pis**d side until
i figured it out as well. I thought windows sychronized your computer
useing an ip adress or something untill i saw the time zone tab in
the options.. how stupid of me.

Maybe you subconsciously want to be somewhere else?
