Xp is supposed to be capable of storing 12 independent entries on the clipboard at one time. How do I retrieve the one I want after storing them on the clipboard?

It's doesn't. Maybe you're thinking about office.

Yeah. That one had me doing some lookups. Only spent maybe 5 minutes
on it looking in Windows help, Microsoft KB, their search, and Googling
but didn't find anywhere that said more than one entry was on the
clipboard at once. I don't remember if the Clipboard Viewer (a 16-bit
app with defects, and not installed by default [see Add Windows
Components applet]) kept a history. I gave up on Microsoft's pitiful
support of clipped text and images long ago and got Clipmate to give me
a huge searchable database of clips. I'm a puny user considering what
all that Clipmate can do.

And I've never felt the need for more than one thing on the clipboard.

Try recalling that nameserver that you copied from a lookup a couple
days ago that today you thought you'd like to do a dig on it. Or that
URL you copied from somewhere but can't find today in your browser's
history. Or the content of the current web page will change on return
but you need to verify its use to see if it worked in a submit.
Originally I wanted it only to give me a small history of clips. Now I
search it for stuff that I did days ago that crops up again. Not
everything has an unlimited undo, and undo'ing means you lose everything
you did so far to get something back that you need from before. For
those canned responses for all those newbies asking the same repeated
questions over and over again, like why they can't access attachments in
OE or posting to the wrong newsgroup, do you prefer to write a new
composition everytime you reply, or might it be far more handy to keep a
special folder in your clips reserved to saving them indefinitely that
you can simply select and paste into your reply? There's a hell of a
lot of use for saved clips both for history and for special-use, and to
compensate for an imperfect memory.
