clip audio won't play

I hope this is not cross posting.........
The audio portion of a clip plays well in 'preview' mode but the audio part
can not be heard when dropped onto the 'timeline'. I have made a lot of
movies & never had this problem. Any imported music I have added in the
timeline will play so I know it is not a 'volume control' issue.
