Hello All,
I migrated a machine win2000 server to a new machine win2k3 server two weeks
ago. It appears to have worked iniatially but now the clients (windows xp)
appear to be dropping randomly. That is group policy features will get
removed. Is there a reason why clients appear to have their connections to
resources dropped all of a sudden.
TIA,
Altria

On the Windows 2003 Server go into Local Security Policy via secpol.msc and disable
the enforcement of using smb signing always. Go to security settings/local
policies/security options and look for the option Microsoft network server:digitally
sign communications (always) and set it to disabled. The run gpupdate
/target:computer /force on the server. There are some know issues with smb signing
with XP computers that disabling this setting may help. If this is a domain
controller, change disable that security option in Domain Controller Security
olicy. --- Steve

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810907 --- this KB explains
the problem a bit and you may want to request the fix from MS.

Hello Steve,
Thanks for the response.
I am not getting any of the errors mentioned in the KB article. As a matter
of fact I am not getting any errors from the client station except w32time
errors which i rectified. I seem to have an issue with stability as far as
server shares....For example it will tell me that a particular folder is
inaccessible (from the client during startup) but if I restart the machine
it will go directly in with no error (pop up window). Also, if clients are
logged into thier machines, the shortcuts become unavailable (being that I
have folder redirection of the desktop). I have actually removed some
machines from the domain and added them back and it seems that fixed the
issue but the problems appeared again.
Do you really think that it is SMB signing and if so, why was it working
fine before.
TIA,
Altria

I don't know for sure if that is the issue, but there are known problems with smb
signing and XP Pro computers resulting in inconsistent network connections. It would
be easy enough to try to disable smb signing for a while to see if it helps and then
you would know. --- Steve
