Can anyone point me in the direction of documentation that explains how a
Win2K Pro client decides which DC to select in a multi site AD.

We have a problem where a clients on a site are selecting a Dc that is
located about 8 hops away, over slow bandwidth links, when there is a Dc
located in one of the sites its hopping thru.

Checked technet, but can't find any particular documentation on the field.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Jayce,

Check out this article:

us;306602

Look specifically at the Generic Record part...

Here is a MS KB that describes the DC Locator process for W2K:
US;247811

Gil Kirkpatrick wrote an excellent article that goes into even more depth on
the process:
http://www.winnetmag.com/WindowsServer2003/Index.cfm? ArticleID=37935

Also, you can simulate the DC Locator process with the "nltest /dsgetdc"
command (available in the Support Tools).

Robbie,

Thank you for completeing my response. I considered
including the "How a client locates a DC" article but
decided against it.

I am reading the article for which you gave the link. It
looks very interesting...

Thanks again,

Cary
