Using XP on host and WinMe on Client, I can only connect with Outlook to
send/receive email and ie6 times out trying to open any page outside
(e-mail address removed) Don't know if the change is due to increased security with XP
SP2 because WinMe machine has been down for several months (moved hard drive
into different computer).
Tried with no XP firewall, no luck.

Consider me a newbie

You have not clearl specified the topology of your network. Why do you mean
by /XP on host and WinMe on Client/. Are you using ICS.

Also please explain us /outside (e-mail address removed)/

For some strange reason, IE6 will only open https://www.netaddress.com.
While Outlook can download email from their server, Outlook Express cannot
access any newsgroup server.

Extremely simple network a single computer using WinXP and a single client
computer using WinME connected via nic, cat5, and hub.

What is ICS?

See that you can resolve the addresses. What is the output you get
when you do
nslookup google.com
ping google.com

How are you sharing the Internet?

I know I am repeating myself but ie6 times out on everything except
netaddress.com

However in the interest of satisfying your question because you are being so
kind to offer help. How do you
nslookup google.com
ping google.com ?

Interesting development:
I used DOS prompt to ping google.com
once with the ICS gateway on the XP computer- no packets lost
and once with the modem on this WinMe computer -no packets lost.
nsloopup "bad command"

The interesting thing is that I can send to the newsgroup via the ICS
gateway on the XP, but I cannot read or download headers until I disconnect
and reconnect via the modem on this computer. I'm guessing sending uses the
same SMTP server that email uses and that's why it works.

It should be *nslookup*.
Since you are able to succesfully ping google.com, it means DNS
resolution is taking place. Now tell me the error you get when
you type www.google.com in the browser. Is it 404 not found, or
500 forbidden. Turn off the friendly error message in the IE settings.

Also what do you get when you type this at the command prompt:
*telnet www.google.com 80*

No! Newsgroups uses completely different server called NNTP server for
both sending and receiving. Email for sending uses SMTP server while
for receiving uses POP server.

"*nslookup*" bad command or file name
"*telnet www.google.com80*" bad command or file name
no error using browser to open www.google.com The page opened, it is a
search engine interface. I was very surprised, but then it is also not
something I use.

However www.wunderground.com also has no error message and after thirty-five
minutes the dialup connection closes. The status bar says opening page and
the blue bar advanced about a third of the way. The Internet Gateway status
dialog box showed no activity after the first two minutes- nothing more
sent/ nothing more received.

No ideas! I wonder why nslookup.exe and telnet.exe are missing in your
system. They are part of the Windows package. Perhaps you can try
ping www.wunderground.com and see if it happens.

I tried that to see if pinging magically opened whatever is blocking the
external signal because google opened after that. Latency was not bad and no
packets lost.

I have tried turning off the Ms firewall on the XP host without favorable
result.

Several months ago this setup worked without problem. The client computer
died and I deleted the connection. After I was able to revive this old dog,
I used ICS to reconnect, but this new connection doesn't allow much internet
activity. When I discovered that, I installed a modem in this one. SP2
happened during the downtime could that be involved?

Before I do all this as you suggest, answer this. If both computers have
absolutely not trouble accessing any website via their own internal modem is
Winsock damaged? The client when accessing via LAN never displays an error
message, in fact the status bar of ie6 goes through the messages "looking
for website" "website found" and finally "waiting for reply"

There is one way to find out...

Fixing the winsock, whether it needs it or not, is not harmful. We could
discuss the 'what ifs' for days, or just try it and in 3 minutes you'll have
your answer and we can move forward from there if necessary.

Carey, Thank you.
I ran a utility on each computer. The XP reported that the LAN connection
was disabled or limited immediately afterwards, so I reran ICS on both
computers. As the problem still existed I ran a different utility on the
WinME client computer, but though it seemed to do nothing the problem seems
completely cleared. Multiple programs are able to access the internet via
LAN now.
Thank you, again!
