Hi All, I have recently bought a client access license for
the windows 200 server family an OEM product. I thought it
would allow me to use some pre installed windows 2000
software that is set up on a server I am leaseing from
uk2.net. But they say it is of no use! The company I
bought the license off say they cannot refund my money
because i opened the envelope to view the license( I had
to scan it to show UK2.net. I am now stuck with what
appears to be a worthless bit of plastic stuck to a piece
of paper!! which cost me 117uk pounds?!
Where do i go from here?

A Client Access License (CAL) is required for each network
workstation (the client) that connects to your server. It serves no
other purpose.

To quote Microsoft:

A license that grants a client machine access to a Microsoft
BackOffice product running on a network of computers. Every client
computer on a network, regardless of whether it is running a Microsoft
or non-Microsoft operating system, requires a client access license
(CAL) if it will be accessing any of the following Microsoft Windows
NT or Windows 2000 services:
a.. File services, for accessing shared files and folders on a
server

b.. Print services, for accessing shared network printers

c.. Remote Access Service (RAS) or Routing and Remote Access Service
(RRAS)

d.. File and Print Services for NetWare (FPNW)

e.. File and Print Services for Macintosh (FSM)

f.. Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) and Microsoft Message Queue
(MSMQ) Server access

g.. Windows NT Terminal Server functionality

Client access licenses can operate in one of two modes:

a.. Per Server licensing, which is based on concurrency of access to
network resources

b.. Per Seat licensing, which is the more commonly implemented
solution and is supported by all BackOffice applications
