I have a disabled student who needs to use the clicklock feature I
usually find under the Mouse settings in control panel, however the
laptop he uses seems to have non-standardmouse settings interface
(possibly Sony's own version ?) and the clicklock function is simply
not there !

The Laptop is a Sony Vaio PCG-9N1M running Windows XP Home.

Can anyone suggest how to enable the clicklock function ?

Regards,

Frosty

If the mouse wasn't supplied by Sony for the laptop, you might check the
mouse manufacturer's website for drivers that might support the feature and
with the manufacturer's tech support for possible help with this issue. The
mouse and its drivers would have to support the feature in order for it to
be enabled. If the mouse was supplied by Sony with the laptop, try
contacting Sony Tech Support.

Check the Mfg site for updated drivers. At worst, buy a new Mouse-the kind
with an installation CD. I like the Microsoft optical mice that come with
four buttons which you can switch functions around for [i.e., right click
function assigned to the left button, etc,]. When you have individuals with
hand and finger disabilities, they will serve you well.

Thanks for the responses to my message, from what I can work out the
modified mouse settings are because it has a touchpad, the external
device is a Kensington orbit track ball.

Initially there apeared to be no specific software installed for the
Kensington but it works fine, just no clicklock option. I installed
the Kensington Mouseworks software andgot some added options, one of
the options will do a click lock type thing but only when the mouse
button is pressed in conjunction with a keybaord key or both mouse
buttons pressed at once. If my student could do either of those things
then we wouldn't need clicklock at all.

I did get a response from the track bal manufacturers they just said
the click lock function is not available with the mouse works
software. This would not be a problem if I had a "normal" XP
installation with the default mouse properties available in Control
Panel, but it's a laptop and is modified. I noticed that on my
Thinkpad it's missing too so it must be a common issue with laptops
when they have drivers/software loaded for their own internal pointing
devices.

If I could just get back to a basic XP mouse properties box I'd be OK
but uninstaling the exiting touchpad driver and disableing the
hardware still has no effect. Perhaps it's not just an additional
driver taht has been installed for the touchpad but a custom Sony
version of XP that will use that mouse options screen even if a
regular pointing device is used.

I did try the Sony site but could find nothing of any help there, I'll
have to wait until monday until I can get hold of anyone at Sony to
ask.

Cheers !

Actually, it may just be the plug and play aspect that is kicking in. Even
without the drivers for the touchpad, the hardware is still connected and
the operating system sees it.

You either need an external mouse that supports this feature and will allow
it to be enabled regardless or you need software that can extend the
functionality of the current mouse and possibly provide this feature.

I'd say the next step is to do some searching on Google, www.google.com, for
mice and pointing devices for people with this type of special need or to
see if you can find software that might enable this feature. If you find
such software, contact the software maker, tell them the problem and ask if
their software would enable this feature; the following search criteria
brought up quite a list of vendors working in this area and they might be
able to help, "computer hardware for people with disabilities."
