See and follow:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#IE_Default
"Set Internet Explorer as my default browser".

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/htmicon.htm
"Incorrect or generic Windows icon displayed for HTM, HTML and MHT files"

If the problem persists...
1 - Run IEFix:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
"IEFix - General purpose fix for Internet Explorer".
2 - Run IE repair script:
http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=24&id=31&artlang=en
"Repair IE6 on Windows XP SP2".
