When I click any folder to open it, a blank Search Results window is
displayed, not the opened folder. How do I correct this problem?

This solution, courtesy of David Candy, should be the first
thing
you try:

Click Start, Run and type this command:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

If that doesn't work, take a look at these articles:

Search Companion Starts If You Double-Click a Folder or Drive
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/searchwindow.htm

Windows launches Search Companion window when opening any
folder

Good luck
