I often have to make numerous edits while preparing a slide in which I use
custom animation. When running the slideshow a click may move the scroll box
down but no new text or picture appears on the slide until several clicks
later. Can someone please tell me an easy way to clear up this problem?

Harry, toss us a bone here...

What all is on the slide? Custom animations of what? Scroll box?
PowerPoint Version?

It is difficult to understand your problem since we are not looking at what
you are. Could you fill in some details so that we can offer suggestions?
Otherwise, you'll get generic solutions that probably will not solve your
problem and only add to your frustration.

Generic solution:
The click is doing something, whether activating an animation, operating a
control tool, or pausing a movie/sound. Look for the object that may be
keeping the program's focus longer than you intended.

Your gentle chiding led me to discover my mistakes. I was mixing very
different kinds of animated text in the same textbox, trying to make a
picture enter part way through a text box, and failing to copy the master to
each new slide. The animations work well if I choose an effect for each
different kind of object in isolation. The clicks that seemed to change
nothing were apparently putting items in a queue for later activation.

The Generic Solution worked?!? That's different.

Seriously, I'm glad your difficulty is resolved.
