When I click and drag a file to a different location my computer copies the
original file to the new location but leaves the original file behind.
I'm sure that before when I used to click and drag the file that my machine
actually moved the original file without copying it. How do I get my machine
to do this again?

Just to be sure, if you click and drag to a location in a different partion
(drive letter), Windows will copy. If you drag to a location on the same
partition, it will be a move.
