When searching your computer for files and folders, how do you clear the search box so that old searches do not keep popping up?

Just press delete on a search that you want to remove.

You can clear the history of the (maximum of 25) search arguments
that you typed into the Search Assistant by editing the registry.

The Most Recently Used (MRU) history for the "All or part
of the file name:" box corresponds to this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603

The Most Recently Used (MRU) history for the "A word or
phrase in the file:" box corresponds to this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5604

To clear the Search Assistant history do the following:

- Close all Windows Explorer and/or Search Assistant windows
- Click Start, click Run, type the following command and click
OK: regedit
- Navigate to the aforementioned keys
- Delete the "REG_SZ" values 000 - 024. The only value that
should remain in the right-side pane is: (Default) REG_SZ (value
not set).

For a method that you can use to quickly clear the MRU history
for the "All or part of the file name:" box visit the following
Web Site, search for the following Tip, and follow the
instructions:

(MRU) search history for files and folders

WARNING: Changing or deleting registry entries may cause
serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating
system. Before you run the Registry Editor I recommend that you
understand how to backup, edit and restore the registry.

In particular, I suggest that you read the following KB322756
article section titled "Export Registry Keys" and then, before
you edit the registry export the keys that you plan to edit. For
more information see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article.

More detailed information on AutoComplete:

-- If you "Clear the contents of the My Recent Documents Folder"
by click the "Clear List" button this will delete the Most
Recently Used (MRU) list that appear in the Run command for your
Recent folder.

For example, "Clear List" will clear the MRU history of entries
such as these: file:///A:/MyTextDocument.txt

It will also clear the commands from the RunMRU that you have
typed in and that appear in the Run command. For example:

CMD /K net user

These RunMRU are stored in the following registry location.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

-- If you use the "Clear History" button in Internet Options it
will empty your History folder. This folder stores shortcuts to
Web Pages that you viewed during this and previous browsing
sessions that appear in the Run command and the Windows Explorer

For example "Clear History" will clear the MRU history of
entries such as these: http://msdn.microsoft.com and
