Clear the Temp directory

I have just checked and see I have about 127MB in my C:\Documents and
Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Temp directory.
Is there a setting or an app that will allow me to clear this when the
computer boots up.
I have tried manually deleting but get some files (e.g. ~DF4D0D.tmp)
that are being used by Windows and so cannot be deleted. I guess I am
looking for something that will totally clear the folder (and perhaps
other temp folders like C:\Windows\Temp) regularly.
BTW - is there any reason that I *shouldn't* clear it?
Thanks

A reboot will work miracles for undeletable temp files (though some are
*very* presistand)

The tempfile is the play where MS-Office (and other products) store copies
of the origional document you are working on. If Office crash (whitch of
course never ever happens ;-)) and you start the program again, it wil try
to recover from the files placed in the temp directory.

Also The temp is a place where compression and setup applications extract
the contents of zip, CAB, RAR, ect... files. This is also true for internet
installers. Most of them place the downloaded files in the temp directory.
If you cannot download a compleet copy of a program (only the internet
installation) you could try to delete all the files in the temp directory,
start the internet installer, and wait until it is finnished and begins to
ask questions about the installation it self. Don't close the installation,
but navigate to the temp directory. Copy the contents (including al
directories and files) to a new location (do not move them, as this might
crash your installer) To be perfectly save, one should also make a zip (or
rar or whatever) file from this copy.
This method does not always wordk, but it saved a lot of time installing
Acrobat reade 4.5 on 140 copmputer (Only a 56k6 dialup internet connection)
;-)

3S (System security suite) is a nice utility to keep your computer cleam. it
is aviable at
http://www.spychecker.com/program/3s.html (Download id while you can, it
seems te author has lost his webpage). damn reccesion...

im not an expert but if u use 98, i would try this
include in autoexec.bat:
del c:\windows\temp\*.*
you can loose possible useful files (e.g. someting you downloaded), but you
cannot damage the operating system
if you cannot delete files manually now, you can delete them tomorrow

Not a good idea (see below), just go to Start > Run, type: "temp" (without
the quotes), and press enter..... then delete the folder contents (MAKE SURE
you have re-booted the computer FIRST!!!)

you can loose possible useful files (e.g. someting you downloaded),
</snip>

Errr.... if your downloading to the temp folder there's something seriously
wrong....... (should never download to the temp folder unless you have
absolutely no other choice)

but you cannot damage the operating system
</snip>

Actually...... yes, you can. If you delete the temp file's before re-booting
the computer, there is a chance that you can screw things up pretty badly,
especially if you've just installed a new program or changed a programs
setting, and the program used the temp folder to store the change.... then
goes bonkers because you deleted it's file. ALWAYS make sure you re-boot the
computer before you delete the temp file's...... just incase.

if you cannot delete files manually now, you can delete them tomorrow
</snip>

Errr..... why wait till the next day?.... (this one's got me baffled.....
it's still going to be the same thing).

Not sure if "painful" is quite the word I'd use (be more inclined to use the
phrase "complete nightmare" myself) <gg>

TempCleaner

It works great!

It has 2 tiny files. 1 file is to configure it, 1 is the actual temp deleter
that runs on startup.

I collect temps in 3 places, and all 3 folders stay clean as a whistle.

Here's a writeup from SnapFiles.com

TempCleaner is a simple little tool that will automatically delete Windows
Temp files whenever you start your computer (or also on demand). It
automatically detects the correct system Temp folder, regardless of your
Windows operating system and you can also add additional folders that should
be cleared. The program runs automatically at startup and files are deleted
to the recycle bin, so they can be recovered if needed.

It was way back... When any IT person had absolute power.
And besides, no documents were lost. Only Ms office, the emial client and a
couple of illegally installed games. He never complained

One way to avoid deleting recent tmp files that might be needed on
the next boot, is to use a program that will only delte files older
than a certain number of days.

Here is batch utility that can do that. Delage by Horst Schaeffer,
part of his PBATS batch utility set -
<http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/horst.htm>

copied from DELAGE.TXT:

<quote>
Syntax: DELAGE filespec days [Options]

filespec: [drive:][path\]filename.ext - wildcards allowed
days: minimum age (number of days)
option /R include read-only files
/L just list files (with age) - don't delete
/? brief help

Errorlevel 0: ok, done (also if no files qualified)
Errorlevel 255: invalid command specifications
else:
Errorlevel = number of delete errors (very unlikely)
</quote>

Have a look as his other utilities as well if you visit the site:

I'm very fond of freeware Empty Temp Folders, which can be set to
remove temp files with each reboot. Also checks dead links, can clear
cookies other than those designated to be saved, clears history, etc.
I've been using it with XP, no idea whether it works for other
operating systems.

Another way is to create a RAM Disk and use X-setup Pro to assign the
temp/tmp, temporary internet files, history, cookies, and most recent
documents to the RAM Disk. You can reserve up to 64M of RAM with no
problems. Mine is set to a 16M RAM Disk, which I find adequate for my use.
Obviously, the advantage is that every time you reboot, all of the
temporary stuff is cleared from your computer. Downside is that you need
sufficient memory. The software is free. See:
