Clear screen delay

Hi,
I'm not a new user. I'm using XP Pro (Sony Media Center build) Sp2.
Here's the problem. When I go to the normal "Start" button at the
bottom left, select it, then I want to see all the "All Programs"
installed as usual, it brings up the list of all the programs, as
expected.

The problem is that before I can track down via scrolling through,
Windows clears the screen and I must go back through and do it again. I
would assume (boy that should get a comment) that there is a universal
tic timer that is set to ms for screen delay to clear with no mouse
action.

If so, I would like to change the time from the current approximately
2000 ms to about 10000 before it clears, if no action with the mouse.

I have no problem with making minor edits in the registry. Anyone have
an idea how that can be done, or if it is even possible? Thanks.

There isn't something like you describe. (... " universal tic timer that is
set to ms for screen delay to clear with no mouse action " ...)
There is a screensaver timer - but....

Soundsa to me like it would just be better if you straightened (organized)
your start menu a bit better where there is no 'scrolling' to do anyway. ;-)

Thanks for your prompt reply. Actually, I am not referring to the
'Start' menu, with about 8 or so programs listed on the left, but the
"All Programs" listing of about 200 or so in 4 columns. On the laptop,
it does not auto-clear with no mouse action, but 2 seconds just isn't
enough to find a program in the 200 listed on the desktop. But thanks
for the insight and your most helpful reply. ;-)

So am I.

You can organize that menu quite easily. All those are is folders under
C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Start Menu and C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu <- and subfolders. You organize those into
folders/sub-folders that make sense and you can shorten what you need to do
to get to items in the start menu and even copy frequently used items to a
specific area/etc.
 
I am not aware of any delay placed on the Start menu. In fact, I've had
my Start menu open for the last two minutes (and counting). IMO
something else must be causing the behavior you are observing.
 
if you have 200 programs listed you are NOT organizing them according to
their use...eg.an Audio folder can hold all of the shortcuts to audio
programs..etc etc..........that way you are only 3 clicks away from the
program you are searching for.
click one....start
click 2 all programs
click 3 audio folder...thats not even a click just a hover
click 4 the program you want
all of this can be accomplished to where Shenan pointed you to......you
create a folder and drag the program shortcuts into it.

I agree; it must be down to some other cause. When I click on Start >
Programs the list stays there as long as I need, always has; probably until
the screensaver kicks in.

Or perhaps not - just remembered, that used to be a trick under Windows 95
to *stop* the screensaver starting (when, eg, defragmenting): just click on
the Start button and leave the menu popped-up. (It didn't stop plenty of
other activity deciding it was going to interfere with the process and force
defragmenter to restart though, if you didn't take care - often in an
infinite loop, IIRC...)
