I also just installed more ram and I have no problems anymore.
However, I am still interested in whether my pc has "software rot" as
a result of XP.
Cleaning XP is a combination of continious attention and regular
dustbusting.
You might begin with a soft cloth like Be Clean or Crap Cleaner.
Than a system registry clean up with a mild detergent like RegClean
of a profound wash to get it whiter than white with RegSpreme
(successor of g'old Registry Cleaner - now Macecrafts).

THan you might clean up that PC from malwares & spyware with some fine
tools. Pick your choice but be a bt-it cautious cos may spyware
cleaners now offer additional tools than don't always tolerate each
other's company like Spybot's TeaTimer with other registry monitors.
Begin with Ad Aware, Spybot & Spyware Doctor.

Oh and get X Blocks. That's some (free in basic version ) polyvalent
tool that cleans on various fronts. Good enough for an extra sweep.
Than you might run an extra check with Microsoft Malware Removal Tool.

What antivirus are you running with Zone Alarm? I found out that it
does not run smooth withthe lates version of Avast.
The combination of Grisoft AVG with (as they propose) Kerio works
smooth a uses a minimum of resources.
