Hi

I'm sure a few people have come across this type of scenario...

My uncle had NIS2003 on his Win98 system and his latest subscription had
recently expired. He saw McAfee Internet Security 2006 on special offer so
he bought that and proceeded to install it.

Of course it informed him that NIS needed to be removed first.

As my uncle isnt very PC literate he thought this meant simply deleting the
Norton/Symantec folders. (Oops!!) and then proceeded to install McAfee which
started OK but then didnt afinish.

I was then called over to survey the mess.

On boot up there were the inevitable prompts of missing Norton files and
eventually it gets to the desktop.

The unsual add/remove progs didnt work for Norton as numerous fiules were
now missing so I downloaded and ran the two suggested removal utilities from
Symantec to clean up the system.

These utilities reported they had completed succesfully.

So I then tried to install McAfee but it keep complaining that Norton rescue
Disk was still on the system and needed to be removed!

It was not possible to complete an install of McAfee. Nor was it possible to
remove the partial install of McAfee as there was no entry for it in
add/remove progs.

Oh dear.

Cant see how to get rid of Norton Rescue Disk if indeed it really is still
there

Cant go foward - cant go back!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ian

How much data does pops have on the computer?

Grab a usb external hard drive, back up his stuff, and I suspect you'd
have windows reinstalled and his data put back with a virus checker of
choice before you're able to fully unravel the mess these two bloated
pieces of AV ware have made of the system.

My parents next computer is a mac mini. And I think I'm gonna buy the
damned thing just to save myself the trouble.

Best Regards,

Reeeeepeatedly.

That would be RnisUPG.exe and Rnav2003.exe?
If you didn't run them again after a restart, do that now.
So I then tried to install McAfee but it keep complaining that Norton rescue
Disk was still on the system and needed to be removed!

I assume you checked the disk drive(s) for a physical disk?
Did you make sure all Norton folders had been deleted?
Look in Task Scheduler. The utilities don't remove Scheduled Tasks.

I've been looking for manual removal instructions for NIS 2003 but so
far have only found for NAV alone. Nevertheless, since Rescue Disk is
part of NAV, this may help:

or

It was not possible to complete an install of McAfee. Nor was it possible to
remove the partial install of McAfee as there was no entry for it in
add/remove progs.

If that becomes a problem when you try to install again, McAfee has
removal utilities too.
Oh dear.

there

McAfee is seeing a reference to it somewhere
Cant go foward - cant go back!

Well, there's another thought. This "Win98 system" isn't by chance a
Gateway with GoBack, is it? :-/

Completely redoing the OS from scratch shouldn't be necessary. Even
assuming he has an OS CD and it can be found, the hell of that
scenario is in the security updates that will no longer be there.
