cleaning old components from project

If I add three datagridviews to a project then delete two of them, I
can still see remnants of the two I deleted. This is true with other
components as well.

How can I clean up the project? I tried 'clean' but this doesn't
remove the old references that were left in the Designer after I
deleted the components.
 
I tried this with vs2008 beta 2 and don't see this behaviour as I understand
you. I looked in form1.designer.vb and did not see mention of the control.
I don't recall ever seeing the behaviour in vs 2005. Some subroutines that
are automatically generated for things like click events stay behind. Is
that what you are refering? I believe this is by design as you may have
attached other events to the same routine.
