Hey, I have an Athlong (Palomino) and while cleaning the Artic Silver off of
my CPU to change the HSF, I accidentally smudged some of the AS off of the
die and onto the area around it. None got onto any of the bridges but
before I plug it back in I want to make sure that I dont wind up frying the
thing. Can I just take some 90% alcohol or goo gone to it or should this be
cleaned in a different matter since I'm not cleaning the die?

Yep. I use alcohol swabs for injections (the kind diabetics buy at the
pharmacy) or a little acetone on a clean rag. Just clean it up and
you'll be okay. Don't bend the pins while cleaning! heh The danger lies
with having so much smudged around that it can form conductive bridges
between CPU surface components.

Well that's just it. It got smudged off the cpu core and is now on the chip
immediately around it. It didn't get to any of the bridges (thankfully) but
what I need to know is will it short out other parts of the chip?

How can it short out other parts of the chip if it's not touching them
and you've cleaned it off anyway???

Firstly, the core itself has been cleaned off, not the area that it got
smudged onto. Secondly, from what I understand with AMD chips the area
around the core, the brown (Palominos, Tbreds) or green (Bartons) material
the core is mounted on, and that makes up the majority of the surface area
of the processor was made to be conductive to keep people from using the
pencil trick to unlock multipliers.
