CleanCache 2.0 is a free (for 1 - 2 systems), very powerful Internet
Explorer 6.0 and Windows XP cleaner.

CleanCache 2.0 will delete the following items:

* Temporary Internet Files and index.dat
* Internet Explorer History and index.dat
* Internet Explorer Cookies (with selective save) and index.dat
* Typed URLs (with selective save)
* Internet Explorer Form AutoComplete (using either CleanCache 2.0
built in AutoComplete deletion or by using IE's built in function)
* Recent Documents
* Start Run History
* Search History
* Windows Temporary Directory
* Registry MRUs
* Recycle Bins
* Create additives to delete user specified files/directories and
registry entries

I wrote CleanCache 2.0 to be very unobtrusive...just set it and forget
it. CleanCache 2.0 runs from the system tray and will clean after
Internet Explorer browser close and Windows shutdown.

CleanCache 2.0 is DonateWare. This is strictly voluntary and can be of
any amount. If you would like to donate to help further development of
CleanCache, PCK or future programs please click on the PayPal icon.

Aaron,
Just curious:
What method do you use to delete the Index.dat files? Does it
automatically find them or does the program assume default locations?

TIA

Requires M$.NET Framework -bloatware- to be installed.

John,
As far as I can see this thing doesn't do what it is supposed to do.
Installed it, tried to clean the IE history, rebooted the PC, noticed
no changed at all, and uninstalled it.

With kind regards,

I missed that. .NET is a module that'll never see time on my hard
drive, so sorry Aaron, neither will CleanCache 2.0.

Just to be clear, I'm not the author of this. I haven't even tried it
before. The quotes above come from the site.

Does anyone know an alternative which does what CleanCache (please
read the list of features) does, or is supposed to do, preferably not
only on XP systems.

You could use Spider from http://www.fsm.nl/ward/. It is able to clean
index.dat files from your computer. For Win9X/ME choose 'Windows
directory' and for WinXP use "Complete harddrive".

I've used Spider in the past. CleanCache can do more and is
configurable, according to the list of features. In fact I am looking
for a freeware alternative for a certain payware program of which I
shall reveal only the initials, T.E.

I like System Security Suite v 1.04
http://www.igorshpak.net/
System Security Suite (3S) is the program to remove internet tracks and junk
files from your computer. It allows you to delete Cookies, clear Internet
Explorer Cache, delete index.dat Files, clear Typed URLs, Windows Temp
Folder and much more. You can also specify custom folder locations with file
masks, which will be cleaned in addition to the selected items. In addition,
the program allows you to view and optionally remove programs that launch
automatically at Windows startup as well as Browser Helper Objects.

That looks more like it. Does it erase securely (!) and remove
registry entries as well?

I am looking for something like this:

"TE allows you to erase the cache, cookies, history, typed URLs,
autocomplete memory, index.dat from your browsers, and Window's temp
folder, run history, search history, open/save history, recent
documents, etc.

With TE's free plugins, you can easily erase the tracks of up to 50
popular applications, such as playlist of Realplayer, Mediaplayer,
QuickTime, recent files of Office, Acrobat ,Winzip, etc.

TE can also let you customize what file(s) and registry entry(s) to be
erased. With TE's Secure Erasing feature, you can erase the files
completely, which can not be recovered by others."
