Clean XP Pro SP2 Installation Wrecks Internet Connection

J

Jude Lucien

I have just formatted my hd and installed XP Pro. All was
fine. Then I installed SP2. I have installed absolutely
nothing else on this pc yet - yet my internet connection
has died.

A new connection was created by SP2, called LAN or High
Speed Internet, which continually shows "Limited or no
connectivity". That connection was not there before, it
just showed my "Broadband" connection to Verizon online.

Bringing up the LAN connection shows that bytes are
continually being sent to and from the pc, but when I try
and access the internet I get "Page Cannot Be Displayed"
in IE and just nothing in Firefox.

I have tried turning off the Windows firewall,
uninstalling and reinstalling my network card, calling
Verizon (who verified that they can ping me and that the
line is working correctly.), all to no avail. My
connection is now dead in the water with no explanation.

Can anyone help?

At least you got a computer booted up after your sp2 install.

I, just like you, installed sp2 on an absolute clean install of xp pro with
nothing else added. I couldn't boot past the BIOS screen.

Have you tried uninstalling sp2 Add\Remove Programs

Jude,

no clue as of yet, but next thing I'd try is to assign a fixed
IP address in the proper range, like the router's internal IP
address plus one, for a test, as DHCP doesn't seem to be working
for some not yet known reason.

How far does that get you?
