i want to erase my whole computer - both of my partitions
and install xp on clean.
how do i format?

I believe this is a choice if you boot to the WinXP CD and look at your
install options (format and install).

check here for clean install instructions
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

When you boot with the XP CD and begin installation you will be asked if you
want to Repair the current installation or perform a new installation.
Select the option to install new and acknowledge that this will overwrite
your current Windows setup. You should then see options to remove your
existing partitions. Remove the partitions you desire to - in your case both
C and D then you will need to Create 1 new partition. Next you will need to
Format. Do not use the Quick Format. After the Format is finished XP's
installation will continue.

You can both format, delete and create partitions from
windows setup on your cd. Just insert your cd into your
cd-rom and let xp install. Check the details on each
screen and you will have the option to do what you need
to do.
If you get into difficulty you may email me direct and
i'll try to talk you through it.

Hope this helps
