Hi

My OS appears to be really slow when shutting down.. and does also appear slightly slow during useage. I have a 1gb ram, 1500Mhz AMD cpu with 80 gb hd..this is just normal useage and not being pushed by games.

What I think I need is a system clean up software, but there seems to be so much on the net to choose from, can someone recommend a good software that would clean up my registry and defrag hd , etc..

Thanks in advance.

to defrag use the built in windows one run this every few weeks to keep your system running well, are you using any anti-spyware software ? if not run Spybot S&D, Adaware, and MS Antispyware.also run a virus scan aswell and it should be better

EasyCleaner does a good job ... and ... it has never caused a problem on any system I have used it on by flaging anything that IS needed.

To keep my system as clean as possible, I use:

RegScrubXP - to clean the reg. So far had no probs following any uses of it and it's the only XP one i found that is free and does the business. (just type it in Google to find a free download site)

I use the standard Windows defrag and disk cleanup apps, and run these every week or so.

Apart from that I would always recommend Norton Antivirus and Ad-Aware SE Professional for keeping crap off my machine. I keep the standard XP firewall enabled and don'y use any other firewall software as it can easily conflict.

Before putting any of these on my machine for the first time, I make sure everything essential is backed up and I re-format my system drive.

Also, it's worth checking that your page(swap) file is set on a disk or partition other than your system disk, and that it is of sufficient size to cope with the apps you run. Most slowing down of machines is due to fragmentation and/or insufficient page file capacity - usually a combination of both!

Many Thanks....

Hi again colleagues...

thanks for the vast amount of information to help out... currently I am trying

EasyCleaner... did a fine job of cleaning up the registry...
Perfect Disk.. evaluation copy... worked well too...

So my computer does appear to be in better shape now...

Once again.. thanks for all the input..

anouther thing you can do is...
type "prefetch" in Run (when you click the "start" tabs on the desktop
and erase everything in there, most of it is junk, someone can explain it better than me im sure.

I have the exact same three anti-spyware programs... wonder just how may of us in this forum have this setup. I dunno, just found that intersting. I like adaware the best though, with MS a close second
