If your CD says "for installation on new computer" it means you have an OEM
disc. You can do a repair install with this, which does not require wiping
the drive. You just can't do an "upgrade" install with it.

Do you have all data backed up? If not, and if you value it, do not
proceed until you have done so.

Before you start, be sure that you have the driver CD for the system. You
will use this disc right after you install XP, and it will turn on things
like your network card and allow video and sound drivers to be installed.
Don't start till you are sure you have these; if you don't have the disc,
it's a lot easier to figure out what the hardware is while the system is
running.

If you really do want to wpe the drive, put the CD in the drive, power down,
and restart. Your system should boot to the CD and start Setup. If it
ignores the CD and just boots to Windows, this means that you have to enter
the system BIOS at power-on startup and change the boot sequence to put the
CD drive first.

Power off your system, then turn it back on. Watch carefully for a message
that says something like "Press <it'll name the key> to enter Setup". That
key is often DEL, F2, or F10. Press that key, and you'll be in the BIOS
and you can find the setting. However, if you have to look for the
message, you may press the key too late, and you have to power off and then
on again.

Once this is done, the BIOS will boot the system fronm the CD first, and you
can follow the directions for Setup.

Clean Install - just google "Clean Install XP" and you'll get links like

Do you know for a fact that you have either "a bad bug or corrupted
file"? If so, there are quicker and easier solutions than a clean
install of XP.

If you have malware, what is its name, and which program informed you?
And if you have a corrupted system file, what is its name and how did
you find out?

checking with mcaffee, was told their file was corrupted. I reinstalled
mcaffee a few times as per their instuctions ( complete removel and
restalling) but the same problem was still there. .... computer reboots on
its own a number of times a day to a point where I can't even scan or stay on
line for long.or even just play card games... I was in hospital and when I
returned real time protection was off and this problem active on my computer

It sounds like someone used your PC while you were in the hospital, so
the PC may be compromised to the point that you might as well perform a
clean install. In that case, I refer you to Patrick's post.

And once you have your nice, new clean install, I recommend you stay
away from McAfee, which is too bloated for most. NOD32 gets high marks.
If you want something free, Avast and AntiVir are very good. This page
is a good reference for dealing with malware:

Patrick gave you two links for installing Windows XP. Here is one I
like:

You, of course, need a proper installation CD to do this.

If your PC keeps rebooting while trying to perform a clean install
(assuming you are doing it the correct way -- you need to make sure you
are booting off the CD), then you have a hardware issue. If you want to
tackle that, look at:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

Otherwise, you should take the PC to a competent tech (not a chain
store!).
