My father is a PC novice and now has an inoperable Dell PC thanks to a virus
(for the second time). The PC was purchased new with Windows XP last year
(i.e. we have an original valid license). When the PC was impacted by the
virus the first time, a neighbor reloaded XP for him (not sure if it was a
clean install or not). However this time, my father has been unable to remove
the virus with virus scan. Therefore, I would like format his hard drive and
reload Windows XP Home SP2 with a CD that I purchased to upgrade my own PC
about two years ago. Given that this SW (i.e. with unique product key) is
already installed on my PC at home, will I encounter any problems from
Microsoft?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks much

Yes - each system requires it's own software.

You should have a Dell restore CD. All manufacturer's are required to
provide the user with a way to re-install the OS - what were you given?
Sometimes the restore option is included on the hard drive as a hidden
partition - check with Dell or read the owner's manual.
