About to install a slave drive and will do a clean install after that. The
internet offers many ( too many ) guides. I would like to have an opinion
one the best one. Are they all about the same? Retired, with lots of time,
so speed is not an issue.

Here are two sites which in my opinion do an excellent job of
outlining the procedure.

If you run into any problems during the installation you might
want to post your question to this newsgroup.

Good luck

You want to know the best installation guide? I don't know about "best"
since I haven't reviewed all the other installation guides, but these
links will get the job done for you:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To

What you will need on-hand

I'm not sure what installing the slave drive has to do with anything so
if I'm misunderstanding what you want to know, please post back with
more information.

I'll decline to vote for the best, but here are four that I recommend:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_install_windows_xp.htm

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

You can use any or all of these.

More information. I had Win 98 that was upgraded to XP Home Edition. I guess
what I want to do is "reinstall"
XP HE after formating the C: drive. I have the XP CD and Product Key. The CD
has these folders : DOCS,i386,SUPPORT,VALUEADD. Also, I have a floppy with
an emergency Win XP start up. So, Format C: , run the emergency start up and
then install XP HE. Get Win upgrades and SP2. Correct?

Actually no. Did you read the links that were given? You can boot
directly from the XP cd and do everything you need to do from there.
Check the links for specifics.

No, not correct. You don't need any floppies, and you don't need to format
first.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_install_windows_xp.htm

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

If your Windows XP CD is an Upgrade one, you'll be prompted to insert your
Windows 98 CD as proof of ownership, so make sure it's handy.
