Clean install vs. Upgrade

I am thinking of upgrading from Windows 2000 Professional
to Windows XP Professional. My hardware is perfectly
capable of handling the new OS and a clean install is
better but does anyone know why an Upgrade shows
performance lags? I am looking for specific examples as
to why upgrading the current OS shows slower performance
than a clean install.

Thanks,
John Harrington

Do a clean install. it you look through these newsgroups more than half of
the problems are due to people not doing a clean install. i would suggest
backup all of your data and doing a clean install.

John,

Every upgrade leave some "residue" from the previous OS. Also, frequently we
find odd utilities that we may have used once or twice many years ago, and
it gives us the opportunity to rid our computers of these unused programs
taking up space (and perhaps still running in memory).

Can this explain slower performance? Sure, but it isn't a scientific study
and every computer is different (regarding what is on it and running).
