Clean Install on Laptop

I would like to cleanly install win2k on my Sony Vaio
laptop but I do not have the recovery disks. I have found
the drivers on the sony website but I am concerned that I
will have difficulties booting after the old Win2k is
cleaned off/pre-driver installation. I have done this
numerous times on my desktop and taken advantage of the
built in drivers from win2k. Are there similar built in
drivers for laptops or will I risk rendering this computer
unusable without the recovery disks?
 
w2k usually installs basic drivers where it does not have specific drivers
for instance mouse and video. What you typically loose with "generic" w2k
drivers are the device features and config options.

however once w2k is loaded you can then install device/notebook/brand
specific drivers downloaded from the Mfr. to fully enable the device
features / options.

eg. (1) my notebook video driver was corectly recognized by Win2K but the
Win2K driver was limited and was missing numerous property and feature
settings like software brightness control, color adjustments, and screen
resolution sizing, external monitor settings, etc.

I installed the drivers from the video Mfr. and enabled all those features.

eg (2) my mouse pad was incorrectly recognized as PS2 mouse, it worked like
a mouse but none of the tap and scroll etc features were possible till i
installed the Mfr. mouse drivers.
