To all I ask when Vista is released to the public doeas anyone know whether I
will be able to upgrade from rc1 or will I have to do a clean install ?? I
upgraded from xp sp2 home....When and if I have to do a clean install can
someone explain how I should do this and no I will not be keeping anything
from previous installs of anything....Basically I want a clean slate and will
go from there...Thanks for all you guys do !!!!

You may be able to do an upgrade-in-place with a full edition. There is no
gaurantee, however.

You will not be able to do so with an upgrade edition.

A clean installation of Vista Gold is a better idea. Insert the dvd and use
the tools to format the target drive and simply do a standard installation.

I would not suggest upgrading from a beta version to the final version. It
would be better as a clean install. To do a clean install, just wipe and
reformat your HDD, and then start the installation. If you wipe and don't
reformat, the install process will format for you, but it will be a quick
format vs. a full format.

I think it will only do a quick format on an unformated drive automatically.
Custom install does not automatically reformat the drive.

That's sort of what I had meant, when you wipe your drive, it should be an
unformatted HDD. At which point, if you install Vista, will perform a quick
format vs. a full format. I think we're on the same page, I just did a poor
job of explaining it. :^)

Gotcha.

I wanted to say thank you to the both of you for your help in this
matter....I actually have a 160 gig sata hard drive formatted with nothing on
it and ready to go so I should be in good shape....Except will I have to
reinstall all my motherboard drivers or not ??..I know I will have to install
all my peripheral drivers.......Thanks again..!!

I think the drivers will be installed by Vista during Setup and missing
drivers should automatically come down via Windows Update a few minutes
after installation is completed. After you are set up, check the Device
Manager for yellow symbols indicating the need for any drivers and then
start worrying about the peripherals.

It all depends on how masochistic you are. If you enjoy
pain and suffering, then by all means go ahead and do an
"upgrade" over a Beta OS!

You WANT to do a clean install. This
helps if you have any issues later. If not, you have to diagnose if
there is any beta code or files still left.

You want all the final files in there, for dependencies and
compatibility.[/b]

The way Vista installs there would not be any beta code left. The installer
does not use the file copy methodology that earlier versions of Windows
used. It lays down an image.

Even with an upgrade?

Especially with an upgrade. All installations of Vista are clean
installations of the OS. Block copying lays down the OS with all bytes in
the block determined. Those bytes not containing data are guaranteed to
contain zeroes, so previous code in the block is obliterated.
