Hello,
Hopefully this is a simple question. I've just installed XP on a
brand new 160 Gig Maxtor HD. On booting after the install XP rebooted
(after giving the merest glimpse of a BSOD). Choosing safe mode got me into
Windows, albeit with a warning that XP had recovered from a serious error
and a hint that it might have something to do with the video driver. But
after installing various drivers (including the manufacturer's video driver)
things seem OK. So my question is, does this sound usual (I have never
installed XP before), or am I likely to be wasting my time spending the
weekend installing other software on a corrupted OS? BTW, the video card
that XP seemed to struggle with is an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400. Athlon XP
2100+. Cheers. TIA.

If you had a video driver that caused the BSOD, and then you installed
another video driver, and the problem is gone, and you can boot into Normal
Mode without errors, then it would seem that the first video driver was the
culprit. It isn't uncommon that a corrupt or buggy video driver would cause
a BSOD. If the BSOD is gone, and you can boot into Normal Mode and have
choices for resolution and color depth that work without error, then you
aren't installing software "on a corrupted OS." If you want to play things
safe, install your programs one at a time, then reboot, and if there aren't
any problems, proceed with installing the next program. When all is done,
and things are running OK, create a System Restore Point.

This may not be correct but if it was me I would disconnect everything
except
for the hard drive, cdrom & video card. I would then do a complete reinstall
of
WinXP ( botting from WinXP and doing a format then install ).

If everything is ok I would then make this a restore spot and then start
getting
the rest of the hardware operating including various drivers that the
motherboard might
need
