Clean a toner drum?

The toner cartridge I have puts horizontal smudges on the output every 4
inches or so. I think it's just some fingerprints on the drum.

Is it possible to clean the surface of a drum without damaging it? Is alcohol
appropriate? Or is will it harm the surface?

This is from the Canon EX engine (HP LJ 4).

Thanks,

Yes, I'm sure it's the toner cart that is causeing the smudges. Replace the
cartridge with an older one, and it goes away.

The laser printers at work occasionally have a problem with a cartridge, and
changing it usually makes the streaking problem go away. (To save money,
they always use refills!)

I had another problem with a home Xerox machine that had been stored in a
humid environment. There were some lines of toner on the drum, and it
apparently wasn't caused by the cartridge. Per the suggestion of an office
supply store employee who sold similar copiers, I purchased some Kensington Lint-Free
Wipes.

He had shown me how to remove the drum, so it was easy to gently wipe its
surface. For a couple of stubborn spots, I moistened the wipe with a bit of
silava.

How does one remove a drum from a toner cartridge? I thought they were pretty
much a sealed assembly.

Anyone know how to remove the drum from a 92298 catridge for a Canon EX
engine?

Thanks,

2 screws holding 2 clamps on top. 2 halves separate. 2 screws holding the
drum axle.
Remove drum. Problem is the wiper blade, not the drum.

Thanks for the instructions. Does this now expose all the toner in the
cartridge? Am I at risk for accidentally dumping all the toner with the drum
out?

It seems that the wiper should be OK. Since the image from the previous page
is gone, doesn't this mean that the wiper has worked? Because the smudges are
at the same location, page after page, I presume this is because something is
on the drum that the wiper can't normally remove.

This isn't, I think, the fault of the wiper, but of some kind of
contamination.

I'll look and see. Report back...

Thanks,
