I have been trying to get the game to run without crashing. I installed the
patch and updated my drivers. But it still crashes to the blue screen every
time I run it. There have been various messages.

Here are my errors:

Error log -- "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\cdRom1"

Dr. Watson -- "application exception ... exception number c000001d (illegal
instruction)"
Dr. Watson -- "... exception number c000005 (access violation)."

Urgh, I've been trying for days to get this to work. Please help!

Hi FelicityCat,

The bad block error could be caused by dirt. Please check the CD
and the CD Player. Clean both using a Cleaning Kit, and check for
scratches on the CD. Try installing the game on another computer,
if the game installs, the culprit is probably your CD ROM drive if it
doesn't install then it's the CD, in which case you need to replace it.

Before replacing the CD, try copying it to your hard drive and then
run the setup / installation program from there. To copy the CD go
to My Computer, Right-Click the CD, Choose "Copy", then Right-
Click on your Hard Drive, Choose "Paste".

Uninstall the game using Add-Remove programs before attempting
to reinstall it. (Start / Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs).

Here are three basic troubleshooting steps which I recommend:

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de and/or
Adaware (www.lavasoftusa.com) to remove any Spyware/Adware.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

If nothing including those 3 steps have resolved the problem so far,
here's more basic troubleshooting steps and information including:
The Safedisc patch
How to check CD for imperfections, and
How to Disable Virtual CD rom drives which is described at:

if you read any forums associated with civ 4 then you'll see that it is
bugged stupid the whole civ 4 game is more or less unplayable! I got my copy
to work to a point but it still crashes eacha nd every time a wonder movie
trys to play best bet is to take it back and get something else! that's what
I'm going to do it's just not worth the hassle of trying to run something
that won't run!

Regarding the game being bugged stupid...I guess I must have been lucky. I
installed the game, installed the latest patch and have been playing the
game w/o any problems.

FelicityCat...your problem definitely sounds like a bad CD (or the drive).
Hopefully the steps outlined by Jimmy isolate the problem for you. How do
other disks work in the drive presently? If other disks are good and
copying the files from the Civ disk(s) to the hard drive to run doesn't work
then I'm sure exchanging the damaged disk(s) will allow you to get up and
running!

I know this post didn't really help solve your problem, but I just wanted to
let you know that the game can and will run! :-)
