Cisco VPN Client Kills DNS when using static IP Address

I installed Cisco VPN Client 4.6 to my Windows 2000 server. My server is
neither configured as a DHCP server nor DNS server and since I have a static
IP address, I don't use the DHCP client either. But alas when I installed
the Cisco VPN Client, my DNS stopped working. I can ping the DNS servers by
IP address and I can also ping the Windows server that I put he client on.
I uninstalled the VPN client and still have the same problem - very
frustrating.

Any ideas?

Thx,

Tim

Are you talking about when connected or after you installed it in general?

Honestly, it shouldn't have done this. I have it installed on my own box
and have used it a few times, with different client sites, and have never
experienced this. Possibly the default interface while connected is the
wrong interface?

If it's happening while connected, while connected via a VPN, when you
initiate nslookup, what DNS address shows up?

Also, provide an ipconfig /all while it's connected and one when it is not
connected please.

I can't connect with the VPN cuz it can't reach the VPN server cuz DNS won't
resolve, so I can't give you the result of ipconfig /all when for the VPN
connection. After installed the VPN client DNS resolution broke, period,
for all attempts to access otehr IPs by name, and after uninstalling the
client, the problem persists. Other than the IP address, the setting sre
athe same as my other server that connects fine, and by the way, the
settings aer the same as they were when the server was wokring (just before
I installed the client).

Note that my first attempt at installing the VPN client used version 4.0.5.
After that failed, then I tried 4.6... to no avail.

Thx,

Tim

Tim,

Use another machine to ping VPN server name you are trying to connect to,
get the IP and try the IP instead of the name.

hmm - I can't start up the VPN service. It says it's either a service
problem or an internal windows error.

Then maybe that's the issue. What errors are in the Event viewer?

Boy, you've got alot of problems here. All of these errors seem to have
snowballed from one error, but I can't pinpoint it. However, after
re-reading your original post, I noticed this one statement that stuck out:

"> since I have a static IP address, I don't use the DHCP client either."

Does that mean the DHCP Client Service is disabled or shutdown?

If that is the case, this service MUST BE RUNNING whether the machine is
configured with a static address or it's getting it from a DHCP server. This
service controls resolution and dynamic registration. Without it, I can
understand all of the errors.

Let me know...
