Does anybody know what this means?

Content index on c:\system volume information\catalog.wci
could not be initialized. Error 3221225620.

I see this in the Application Event Viewer

This may be unrelated, but I am having a problem
everytime I try to uninstall software....

I am using Windows XP Home SP1

The System Volume Information folder is used by System Restore. These
things (system restore and any contents in SVI folder) are not necessary
for installing or uninstalling software. You may want to try clearing your
system restore points as some viruses, worms and trojans will hole up in
this location: Use System properties. On the System Restore page, turn off
System Restore. Restart the computer and then re-enable System Restore.

Also... just double checking... you are using Add/Remove Programs to
uninstall the unwanted programs? Or a shortcut in the start menu that
points to the program's uninstall routine?

Thanks for the reply. I found that the two issues are
unrelated because the CI error predates the install
issue. At that point I did a System Restore and can now
uninstall (root cause of problem not know...). So I am
left with the CI problem (if it truly is one).

At this time, since I am using the restore points, I do
not want to wipe them. Are you suggesting that the CI
error can be cleared up by deleting the restore points or
that the install problems might be improved? Is there
anyway to get more precise information on the CI error
maybe to localize a specific restore. Are you also saying
that this is a don't care error and only associated with
restore points.

Thanks for you reply!

Steve, what I was saying is that there was no reason for a problem (or
non-problem) with System Restore to interfere with the installing or
uninstalling of software.

Sometimes the red/yellow marked messages in Event Viewer are more
informational instead of reports of dire error conditions. Today I looked
up a bit about "CI event 4127." Do you use the Indexing Service? CI is a
reference to that service. Here's a list of what the event numbers mean:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...ows2000/en/server/help/ISMain-concepts_78.htm

Although the reference for 4127 has the dire "contact MS Support" notation
next to it, there is more info at this site that may be more applicable for
your situation:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=4127&source=

If you don't need Indexing service and turn it off, then yes - this becomes
a non-issue. If you need/want Indexing, then you'll need to try some of the
suggestions and/or contact MS support.

Great, thanks, I did not know what this meant. Now that
you say indexing service (and I look up what it means) I
see that I don't need it. I don't know how it got enabled
but I will turn it off and this will become a non-issue.
Thanks for your help which was very helpful!!

You're very welcome. I keep Indexing service turned off as well. It would
be *very* useful on a large network. Only running a 2 PC home LAN here so
don't see much point in using it.
