can anyone help me find out why chunks of memory keep going missing from my
hdd i am on xp home with a amd 3200 chip

It would very helpful if you would "describe"

1) total size of your HDD

2) Explain in better details what "chunks" you are looking for?

80 gig hdd i deleted 18 gig of films and when it cleared i had 2 gig free
where did 16 gig goand then runfantom cd and it said not enough disc space
when checked i had 745 mb left

After you deleted those film files, did you empty the Recycle Bin? And, if
you use Norton tools, did you empty the Norton bin (whatever it is called)?
