Hi

I thought I'd sent a message about this a couple of days ago, but now can't find it.

I have been using Eudora for 8 years, and am contemplating switching to Outlook as my email client.

I would appreciate comments on the pros and cons of each program.

Regards

The biggest pro for Outlook is that it does much more than Email. The con
is that it does much more than Email. I say these two contradictory
statements because it all depends on your need. If you need nothing more
than POP or IMAP access to an ISP, then Eudora may be a better choice. It
has one goal: the clean reception and sending of Email by standards
conformance. It does that job extremely well. Plus, the people who
maintain Eudora are very open to improvement suggestions. I don't think you
can say that about Microsoft, in general. Their goal is to get your money.
All else is secondary to that. Moreover, they decide what features you want
and need, not you.

However, if you need calendaring, task management, journaling of your work,
and Post-It Notes (tm)-like features, then Eudora isn't a good fit at all,
because it simply doesn't do those things. I guess I'm saying that if you
research what the two programs do and compare them to your requirements,
then the answer of which will be better for you should be quite obvious.

Dear Brian

Thanks for responding.

My main interest is in email and I realise I could do a thorough comparison of features. I guess I am interested in cribbing off anybody who has already done the analysis, and also to hear of any pitfalls not revealed by the analysis.

Part of the issue is that I like the features of Eudora, but it seems to be responsible for a lot of crashing on my computer, and I hoped that Outlook would be as good, but not so strain my computer. Does anybody know?

Given the above, I would suggest, then, that you try using Outlook Express
(not Outlook). Outlook Express is simply a mail (and, incidentally, news)
client. It does the same things that Eudora does, for the most part,
without doing more than you need. It's also reasonably stable (I personally
have never had Outlook Express crash in many years of regular use). Lastly,
you probably already have it on your computer, if you also have Internet
Explorer.

Outlook, on the other hand, appears to do WAY more than you need and will
use proportionally more resources on your computer with no (apparent) added
benefit.

I just switched. Outlook has more minor problems-error
messages, etc. So far, however, I do like Outlook better,
particularly when used with a PDA. There are more
sophisticated features, better views, and I like editing
with Word, which I could not do on Eudora. (I had version
5. or 6.).
