which AMD Athalon CPU is recommended for mostly office (Project,
Access etc.), some graphics, and a little gaming (I don't intend to
play Doom3 today but I'm trying to think a few years ahead..)

Apologies, but that's a pretty silly question. The fastest one you can
afford is obviously recommended.

There's quite a price range but if you're talking value for $$ I'd say the
lowish end of the new socket 939 Athlon 64s is where to get in right now -
they start at ~$200. for a 3000+ including a fan/heatsink at www.newegg.com
and going up to ~$300. for the 3500+. There's not a lot of choice in mbrds
so far but the MSI ones are nice with either a VIA or nForce3 chipset.
NewEgg keeps running out of the nForce3 mbrd but they are holding the price
at ~$130. which is reasonable(?).:-)

Be very careful about choice of memory modules and follow the
recommendations at the www.msi.com.tw global site.

AMD 64 2800+ is going to cost slightly above XP 3000, but is
going to beat hell out of it even in 32 bit apps - it is close
to xp 3400 in perfomance. It has increadable memory bandwitch because of
integrated controller, and once 64 bit windows and apps will come out it
will give it another 10-20% advantage.
Regarding doom3 - I am running it on 64 2800+ in medium quality,
1024/768 and it runs fast and smooth so you do not notice it is not
a movie - basically faster than you can see a difference with your eies.
You will need a 100$+ graphic card however and fast harddrive.
