Hi.
I am a new IT Technician for a small office for around 30 pcs and 20
laptops. They arent used all day, just a few hours a day. All I need is to
provide internet access, access to files on a shared drive split into
departments and names, although everyone will be able to access all files,
so no need to make individual profiles with secure file access. At the
moment the server is running on NT and to be honest, its daunting because
although I am competant with computers, someone else has set it up and it is
not what I am used to.
Please, could anyone recommend somewhere I can go for general
troubleshooting when problems arise and also:
I am to buy a new server in the next couple of months and set it up how I
want it. It has to last a few years and has to provide simple services to no
more than about 100 or so pcs (for the forseeable future). How do you choose
a server? The current one has only around 256 MB RAM, less than 40Gig HD I
think but I will have to have a look at the exact specs. I want it to run
nice and fast itself, but for only the limited services I dont need to spend
more than £1000 do I?
Stupid question, but the Internet is through an ISDN router. I have no idea
how these are set up as all of the other places I have been have had ADSL
modems and shared internet connections! I cant see any dial up info anywhere
and am very unfamiliar with this set up. How does the server and other PCS
get online through this ISDN box? I know I should probably just get another
job now before I get the sack, but I want to learn this stuff and quick.
Thanks for any reply.
