Choose computers to share folders with?

I have small network which consist of 4 windows XP running computers and
wireless clients that i don't want to share files with. I'd like to be able
to select computer at file permissions, `location` window without an active
directory server. Any ideas?

You'll need XP Pro, not Home, to set up anything other than simple file
sharing. And then you'd create users/passwords identical to the ones used on
all the other workstations. Then set the permissionso on your "server" so
that user X and Y have access but A and B don't. Etc.

You can't set permissions based on the connecting computer. Just the user.

Only allow the IPs of machines you trust in your firewall list of IPs
allowed for File sharing...
If you want to share with none of them - have no exception for file sharing
enabled through your firewall...
 
Thank you for answer. I can fix the problem that way. But how do i get to
chose another local network computer in `Select user or groups` window under
folder permissions, without having an active directory server? For example,
SQL Server Management Stuio can do it when i connect to remote server and
click on Search under Logins.

Oh, duh. I wasn't reading clearly.

You can't.

You can in fact set a password for file sharing, even on Home.

Type 'cmd' into a Run box, then in the commandprompt:

net user guest {yourchoiceofpassword}

Limitation is that there can be only one common password. If you trust the
local users not to 'spill the beans' this may be adequate.
