"Choose a Network Connection" keeps popping up

This is a relatively new problem with WinXP Pro (SP2). I'm online with my
cable modem, click to go to a new page, and a little window pops up saying
"Choose a Network Connection". It shows a drop-down list of my modem
connection, and four boxes: Connect, Cancel, New and Properties.

If I don't do anything, the web page won't change. As soon as I hit Cancel,
the webpage changes.

It seems as if this box pops up anytime it doesn't recognize I'm online, for
whatever reason. Maybe the cable modem cuts in and out for a second or two.
But it's really annoying. Is there any way I can tell Windows to give it
more time before it assumes I need to use the modem?

You are confusing a telephone modem with a cable modem. Think of a cable
connection as an open network connection, not a modem. You don't dial the
cable modem and hang up. Your computer & cable modem are always online even
if you are not using the Internet. That's why you need a good firewall and
antispyware. Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Options, Connections, choose
Never Dial a Connection and delete any Dial up settings. You are using a
Local Area Network (LAN) to connect when you have a cable connection. Ask
your cable provider for instructions or use their help site for more info.

Honest, I know the difference between a cable modem and a phone modem. I
was just assuming that the cable modem connection was momentarily cutting
out - it does happen - and that was causing Windows to ask if wanted to use
the dial-up. Earlier, I went into Control Panel/Internet Connection (I
don't use IE) and chose Never Dial, and am waiting to see if that cures it.
So far, it has, but it's only been a few hours.

It appears you have gotten to it before I could suggest it, you should be fine now.
