Hi,
I am trying to do chkdsk on my NTFS disc but as expected it cant because
some files are open. OK, so it suggests it does a check when windows
restarts, ok says I.
When Windows restarts I get a message (very quick) that in so many words
says it cant do it as it is a NTFS disk and is finishing the check.
How do I do it? Any help appreciated.

Hi

Try running chkdsk from Safe Mode.

That makes no sense; XP is an NTFS intended OS and chckdsk definietly works
with it. To say it can't do it, and then that it's going ahead and
finishing the checks isn't logical either; are you sure you have the
messages straight?
Any chance you're using a chkdsk from another source? If not, then the
app about has to be corrupted. Do you have any other drives you can try to
run it on and see if it works on those?

Hi

Which switch(es) are you using with chkdsk?

I know its a bit odd, but it definatly says it cant do it, the message in on
the screen for about 3 secs!
Also, if this helps, I typed chkdsk in the run box and its started to go
through the chkdsk routine but stops just after it gets to stage 2 of 3 and
dissapears off the screen!
Also,I tried to let it run a check after re-starting into safe mode, it
rattled away for over an hour with a screen full of dos stuff then simply
stopped all activity, the screen staying as it was and the disc light on
steady. I reset after it had been quiet for half an hour.
I am begining to think I have a hard disk problem. I have had 5 weeks of
BSOD's with a Kaspersky klif.sys cause.

Hi Will, Tried without then /f and then /f/r.

You don't type chkdsk in the run box you type cmd hit enter
and you will get a command prompt THEN type chkdsk and your parameters.

Hi

You need to type

cmd

in the Start/Run box first, then use chkdsk from the resulting command
prompt.

Though it should have worked on a reboot...

try booting from your XP cd and running chkdsk /r from the repair console

That sounds very much like your Windows XP has somehow gotten polluted
by an old Windows 9x version of CHKDSK.

Use Start - Search and check your hard drive for files named
CHKDSK.EXE

For each instance found (except the one in EBD.CAB) right-click on the
file name, select Properties and go to the version tab. They should
all be version 5.1.2600

Good luck

Ouch! However you look at it, there seems to be corruption of at least the
chkdsk file, OR something is interfering with it; as in, virus/trojan, etc..
Klif.sys is known to have problems AND serious vulnerabilities, I'm
afraid. I have no actual personal experinece with it though.

Have you read removal instructions for the virus you had at symantec.com?
IF not, you should, and soon.
It's also time to run AV and at least 3 spyware removal tools, all updated
just before running them. It's even possilbe the chkdsk.exe on your machine
has been infected.

First I'd say concentrate on being sure you're completely free of malware.
It sounds like you're running without AV and without a firewall, each of
which is dangerous and prone to infestations.

Check out this link:
http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/index.php/t6113.html

Read the whole thing because at first glance it might not seem to apply to
you, but furhter down it does. That's not a definitive answer, but will
give you an idea why I said what I said.

It might be time to do a full backup and prepare to reinstall your OS as the
fastest "fix" for this.

Hi Ron and all,
Well, it's been a long ride and I have kind of arrived, I have somehow
managed a CHKDSK at about the 20th try in Safe Mode. It found a lot of
problems which were cleared by /f. BUT, now it wont defrag! says the file is
missing (dfrg.msc)
Someone suggested I try sfc/scannow typed into cmd which apparently when
used with my XP disc with check and replace missing or damaged files. But of
course it wont cos my CD is not SP2! After slipstreaming XP and SP2 together
it still cant find what it needs so I am going to reinstall clean!
Thanks to all for your advice, I am learning fast even though only a couple
of years from my pension! :)
