chkdsk

i try to do a chkdsk from the properties of the c drive and i get this on a
blue screen when i restart

Checking file system on C:
The type of the filesystem isNTFS:
Cannot open volume for direct access.
Windows has finished Checking the disk.

Any idea on how i can fix this without redoing a repair or a redo of the
operating system?

Go to the drive manufacturer's web site and download their free
diagnostic testing utility and run that to check out the drive.

Good luck

Do you have Spyware Doctor? Seems to be a rash of problems lately.

Cannot lock volume for direct access
Cannot open volume for direct access

Unable to run CHKDSK
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555484

A program called Hitman Pro can cause the problem.

Spyware Doctor can also cause the problem.

The /x switch doesn't work if Spyware Doctor is installed. Spyware Doctor
needs to be uninstalled or...

From MaraJo...
<quote>
I also got a reply from PCTools and
they are aware of the problem and are working on it.
Here is their advice to me:

"We are aware of the problem with chkdsk, defrag and
error-checking not working with Spyware Doctor installed.
Our development team is currently working on this issue.

"In the meantime, you could perform the following steps
which will allow chkdsk, defrag and error-checking to run
on startup.

"1. Exit from Spyware Doctor (to exit from Spyware
Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in
the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows
taskbar) and select Exit from the menu that appears)

"2. Delete the file
ikhlayer.sys from c:\windows\system32\drivers\

"3. Restart Spyware Doctor

"Chkdsk, defrag and error-checking should now work."
<end quote>
<snip>

<quote>
Wes; I'm impatient I guess, I reinstalled and tried to check
the disk for errors again after deleting 'iklayer.sys'. It works
just fine doing that. I had to stop the scan as I didn't need
it, but to let you know that everything is copacetic. Either
deleting that file or uninstalling will correct the problem
until they can get the problem ironed out.

Also a really old version of ZoneAlarm (a version from 2004) can cause the
problem.

[[There is currently no fix for this problem.]]
[[NOTE: You may have success if you schedule Chkdsk to run at startup and
use the /X switch, which will force a dismount. ]]
from...
JSI Tip 7079. You receive 'Cannot open volume for direct access' when Chkdsk
runs during Windows XP startup
http://www.jsifaq.com/subO/tip7000/rh7079.htm

To run chkdsk from a command prompt.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt, type:

chkdsk C: /x

Hit your Enter key.

The following error message appears:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y, hit Enter and close the command prompt.

Reboot.

The /x switch: Use with NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first, if
necessary. All open handles to the drive are invalidated. /x also includes
the functionality of /f. The /F switch fixes errors on the disk.

You shouldn't run chkdsk from within windows. It can give unpredictable
results. If you want to run it from Start | Run type in "chkdsk /f c:"
without the quotes, click ok. In the command window it will give a
message that the volume is in use and would you like to schedule it to
be checked at the next system restart. Type Y and enter. Then restart
the computer. Chkdsk should run.

Dell does not manufacture hard drives. They get them from a number of
different suppliers, depending on who gives them the best price on a
large quantity purchase.

Most Dell systems that I have worked on recently have had Maxtor hard
drives. Go to
http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/M...oftware Downloads/All Downloads&downloadID=22
and download their PowerMax diagnostic utility and follow the
instructions for using it.

Good luck

The blue screen tells me I need to CHKDSK and then start again. Well, can
anyone tell me how to run chkdsk before starting XP?

Start, Run, Type cmd, at the prompt type chkdsk. It will tell you at the
next reboot chkdsk will run. type exit, enter, reboot.

I gave you instructions for how to do it from the recovery console.

Sorry to say none of the things you guys suggested would work, simply because
you can't do the chkdsk without starting your computer. I could not even get
into the DOS mode. And I could not even try to reinstall the system since my
CD ROM drive was not working either.

Here's what I did to revive the computer:
1. Went to Best Buy to purchase a hard drive "enclusure" that enabled me to
read my HD from my laptop via USB port; I found nothing wrong on it. -- I put
the HD back on the desktop and it still did not start -- the same blue screen
again.
2. I placed a driver file IOMDISK.SYS that I had removed earlier (by
mistake) back in the windows\system32 folder
3. Remounted the HD to my desktop and it woke up!!!!

So the bottom line is that we cannot trust Microsoft's message on a blue
screen; and, unfortunately, it is impossible to solve the problem in a
situation like this without the help of a second computer.
