CHKDSK scheduling keeps restarting computer

When I schedule error checking on C: drive and restart, it checks the C:
drive and then instead of launching WinXP it restarts again, until I choose
the option to boot the last known good configuration. But if I do that it
would lose any repairs that were done. Is there a fix for this? When I
schedule the logical drives, there is no problem. It's just the C: drive.

if you want, do a "repair" with your windows setup cd. select new install,
then repair current installation option.... if it wants to do a chkdsk i
would let it do a thorough check and to mark any bad sectors found....

Do you mean a reinstall? Or a repair? I put in the CD and booted from it and
chose option R for repair. It just gives a command prompt. And I typed
chkdsk /f (to "fix" errors) but it didn't have that switch so I did chkdsk
/p and it reported that the drive has errors. But doesn't look like it fixed
those errors. I may have deleted some files earlier that I shouldn't have,
and maybe that's why it's acting weird. How do I reset the whole thing to
what it was before? Unfortunately I don't have any prior Restore Points or a
backup of the registry.
