I have a hard drive that I am trying to backup becasue it is going bad. I
can't seem to get all the way through an XPbackup which is 11gb. I ran
chkdsk/f/r and the following error at step 4:

windows replaced bad cluster in file 36888 of name
system~1\restor~1\RP256\A0091975.exe

I ran this chkdsk last week and found the same thing. I noticed the hard
drive is very hot and beeping every now. I think its going to go at any
time. I have a new hard drive ready to put in but am hoping to get my old
one backed up completly. Can anyone tell me if it is possible with this type
of error.

You ran/run CHKDSK/f/r You cmd is wrong,try:CHKDSK C: /f or CHKDSK C: /R
You might try saving youre files/folders/settings in the file transfer
wizard instead
of backup,in the wizard set as old computer, transfer data to new
folder,once its
thru, transfer to a cd.Or,set new drive as slave on same IDE cable as
C:,format
the drive,then go to run,type:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in
the
DOS window,D: being the slave drive.

If his syntax for chkdsk was wrong it would have not run and he wouldn't
have gotten the msg "windows replaced bad cluster in file 36888 of name
system~1\restor~1\RP256\A0091975.exe". You need not specify the drive
letter as drive C is the default.
