Hi everyone,
Hopefully someone might be able to suggest something new for this
problem as I'm out of ideas and out of places to look for an answer..
Last week one of our PCs started blue screening during boot sequence
(Windows 2K, HD 20GB FAT32, two partitions - problem with first (boot)
partition), after trying meagre repair tools available on the Win2K CD
to no avail I decided to install the disk as a slave on a working
Win2K machine. That done I thought I would simply be able to run a
CHKDSK repair on the knackered partition, extract the docs we needed
from the HD and then just do a complete reinstall.
The two partitions show up mounted on the new machine, but while you
have no problem accessing the files in the second (undamaged)
partition, on trying to enter the other partition the 'Disk not
formatted...' message appears. This suggests a problem, n'est pas?
Anyway, trying CHKDSK d: /f I get a boxed message appearing saying
'Chkdsk.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You
must restart this programme.' In the event log it reports problems
accessing the said hard drive. I've tried a few things, including
reparing the boot sector using diskprobe, but I'm getting nothing..
Basically, is there any other way of running chkdsk or workng my way
around this problem in order to get access to these documents?? And
please don't bother suggesting professional data recovery companies,
I'm working for an NGO in Cameroon - it ain't really an option.
Thanks for your help,
Ed
