Chkdsk on Hardware Raid-1

I have a 3ware Escalade 3006-2 hardware raid card with 2 new hard drives.

Everything is fine, but I'm wondering what happens if there is a
degradation in one of the drives?

Is the RAID BIOS smart enough to know that bit error has occured and does
it take care of it for me, or do I have to take the disks out of the RAID
to run surface scans on each from time to time?

Will ChkDsk ever discover lost clusters or other errors before there is a
total drive failure on a mirrored system?

Lost clusters may be found even when a drive is physically 100% healthy.
Hard drives can go from healthy to dead in under 2 seconds, you can have a total drive failure in the blink of an eye, even though
chkdsk reported no problems only an hour ago.
