CHKDSK keeps having to repair disk.

I have Win XP with latest upgrades.
More and more frequently CHKDSK fires up at the start and
has to repair corrupt indexes, fix attributes, etc.. (I
can't even remember all it does but it sometimes does a
lot.)

I will be replacing the motherboard with a new one from a
different manufacturer soon in the hope of fixing this
problem.

Among other notifications CHKDSK often does work on an
index $I30. How can I find out what the problem is with
this index or indeed my whole file structure. Does CHKDSK
log to a file?

I have run Norton disk doctor in an effort to stop this
problem but to no avail.

I have RAID 1 so does that mean files on both disks are
being corrupted.?
Can't you remove one of the drives in a RAID 1
array and the computer will still boot? If so remove
1 drive at a time and see if you still have the problem.

Write to log file: from the command prompt
type:chkdsk[space]>C:\chklog.txt[enter] to redirect the output to
chklog.txt. Of course, you can set your own filepath and filename.

It may be that the hard drive is failing. Why replace the
mobo if it is the hard drive? It is like having a tooth
pulled because you have a sore toe.

| Did you do diagnostics on RAM and HD first? Changing
mobo's quitte an
| extreme step (the hardware equivalent of "just re-install
Windows" I
| guess) and will do zilch positive if your HD or RAM is
defective.
|
| OTOH, it will have plenty of negative impact - you will
prolly be
| forced to do a "repair" install of XP that will blow away
all patches
| and leave you naked to attack by RPC exploiters.

OK I will replace one drive at a time and see how things
go.
I have Norton Systemworks with a bunch of utilities
including Disk Doctor.
I have used DD to diagnose the HD but it seems to use
CHKDSK in the Windows Restart phase.
Can you suggest other diagnostic tools?

Most hard drives have SMART, you can see the report using
AIDA32.

SpinRight from www.grc.com is great, but can be expensive
just to check a single system.

I would backup the boot drive asap, it is most likely the
drive causing the problem on startup.

I have two Seagate Barracuda 7200 under RAID 1.
I downloaded AIDA32 but my drive does not have SMART.
I have backed my application data but cannot backup my
whole disk becasue neither Norton Ghost (which I have)
nor Drive Image support RAID1.
Do you know of any reputable backup utilities.
I am very wary of no-name software 'cause you only know
100% if it works AFTER the disaster.
